American History Novel Project

Students will read a novel and keep a journal of six topics (these topics are included on the assignment description page which each student has). There will be a check of these journal notes throughout the trimester. The first check will be Friday, Sept. 25, 2015. Students should have read at least 1/3 of the novel by that deadline, and they should have kept a journal on all 6 topics. The journal should be about 1/3 of a page per topic (worth 50 points). The second check will be Friday, Oct. 23, 2015 (worth 50 points). At that time students should have 2/3′s of the book read and 2/3′ of the journal completed. The book should be completely read and final journal notes are due on Friday, November 20, 2015 (worth another 50 points).

I will give a book talk on each novel, so students will have an opportunity to make an informed choice of the novel they would like to read. The novel is related to topics we will study in our American history class throughout the trimester. Since it is a novel, students will experience history from the point of view of historical characters. Hopefully, as they let their imagination soar back through time, American history will come alive. It is easy to delay work on this assignment, so please keep reading and journaling!
